From intricate fashions to age-old rituals of commitment, there’s a whole lot that makes Latina wedding customs totally different from Western ones. Here are some of our favorites that you just should keep in mind preparing your own big event:

Las damas y los caballeros

Just like bridesmaid and groomsmen, las madrinas y padrinos (godmothers and godfathers) are very important to many couples who intend to have them in their weddings. They are responsible for some of the most important bits of the ceremony, such as gifting las arras de desposorio and hanging el trampa de boda through the ceremony. These people can be considered the “sponsors” for the couple as they navigate marriage together. This is why a few couples select older married people to be their madrinas and padrinos.

The alluring felicidad de la mari (the sea snake dance) is a very entertaining way for the newlyweds to watch their guests at the reception and also a chance for everyone to dance into a Latin music. Having a music group that can perform mariachi, salsa, or reggaeton is a wonderful idea to make this event really memorable for your guests!

After having a long night of dancing, the couple may want to have a second reception called la tornaboda. As of this more romantic get together, the few would serve breakfast with their guests, who was simply at the wedding ceremony all night. This is a great opportunity for the bride and groom to thank all their guests, especially because they prepare to leave because of their honeymoon!
